Professor Hyuncheol Park received the B.S and M.S degrees in Electronic Engineering from Yonsei University, Korea in 1983 and 1985, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, USA in 1997. His doctoral research is focused on the design of new coded modulation and equalization schemes using diffuse infrared radiation.
He had served as a senior engineer from 1985 to 1991 in Samsung Electronics Co., Korea. At Samsung, he developed an automatic vehicle monitoring (AVM) system which provides locations of target vehicles to the control center and he received the Bronze Medal of Samsung Group Technical Award in 1990 in recognition of his technical success. After his study in the USA, in 1997, Dr. Park returned to Samsung as a principal engineer. He led several pioneering projects including the design of modems for various types of high-speed wired/wireless communication standards such as IEEE 802.11a Wireless LAN etc.
In 2002, he joined the Information and Communication University (ICU), Korea as an assistant professor of School of Engineering. At ICU, he taught several communication courses such as Advanced digital communication theory etc. In recognition of his teaching ability, he received the Best Teaching Award in 2004. His lecture has been one of the best-selling lectures in Cyber-ICU. From 2003 to 2011 more than 160 students from industries and research institutes such as Samsung Electronics Co. etc. had registered for his cyber lectures. He offered several short courses such as Modulation and coding for wireless communications, Key Technologies for WiBro, and Multiuser OFDM Systems.
In 2008, he was an invited researcher of Electronic Telecommunication Research Institute (ETRI) on his sabbatical leave. He focused on design the short-range disaster relief communications.
After ICU was merged into Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in 2009, Professor Park joined the Department of Electrical Engineering. In 2011, he received the Best Teaching Award from the Department.
Based on his industrial careers, Professor Park’s research has been focused on solving the practical problems arising from the development of the cutting-edge communication systems. By tightly coupling with industries and research institutes, he has found research issues to improve the performance of new communication systems such as 5G mobile communications etc.
Professor Park has been a director of Lab. for Information Transmission since 2002. Professor Park advised 14 Ph. D students and 38 Master students who have been hired by industries and research institutes in Korea. He performed 81 pioneering researches funded from government, research institutes, and industries as a principal investigator.
He authors 65 international journal papers and 130 international conference papers. And he has 24 US patents, 1 Europe patent, and 47 Korea patents.
Professor Park is a senior member of Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), a life member of Korean Institute of Communication Science, a life member of The Institute of Electronics Engineer of Korea, and a member of IEICE. Also he has been an editor for Journal of Communications and Networks (JCN) since 2005.
He served as a General Chair of IEEE MTTS International Microwave Workshop Series on Intelligent Radio for Future Personal Terminals 2011. He also served as a track chair of Transmission Technologies and Communication Theory for IEEE Vehicular Technologies Conferences 2014 spring. He had been an assistant director in The Institute of Electronics Engineers of Korea and is currently a member of council in Korean Institute of Communication Sciences.
He was a CP (Creative Planner) for Mobile Communications in the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (MSIP). Currently, he is a vice chair of executive committee of 5G Forum Korea. He received an award from the minister of MSIP in 2016 for his contribution for 5G initiation.
